For University of Vermont Theatre professor Martin Thaler and his students, costume design begins with a careful reading of a play’s text and proceeds to deep research about the time period and its clothing. With vision in hand, figures are drawn, clothing is added, and designs are colored. "It’s all about blending the history and research and the imagination of theater into the construction and design process," Thaler says. The Special Collections exhibit includes a selection of Thaler’s costume designs and drawings, mostly for UVM productions. The drawings come to life with watercolor and attached fabric swatches.
