The Sun, Moon, and Pancakes: Photographers, Art and the Heavens

From Ashes in the Night Sky

Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 5:30 PM
Marsh Room, Billings Library
48 University Place
University of Vermont

As Vermont looks ahead to the solar eclipse, Bill McDowell, professor of photography in UVM’s School of the Arts, will talk about art photographers who have used the sun, moon, and night sky as subjects.

Professor McDowell teaches photography courses at all levels, and is especially interested in teaching about photobooks and the poetic document in photography. His photographs and artist books are represented in the collections of numerous universities and museums. His publications include Banner of Light: The Lily Dale Photographs, Ashes in the Night Sky, and Ground. McDowell’s project, Roxham Road to North Elba, connects contemporary asylum seekers crossing from New York into Canada with the Underground Railroad and contemporary abolitionism. Ashes in the Night Sky and Ground are available in Silver Special Collections.

The presentation is sponsored by Silver Special Collections and the School of the Arts at UVM.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Silver Special Collections at uvmsc.uvm.edu or 802-656-2138.
