Non-fiction Comics Workshop

A man wearing glasses, a blue shirt and tan hat is surrounded by comic characters in black and white. A yellow label written on the man's chest reads "Marek (cartoonist)."

November 15, 2024 4:00-5:30
Marsh Room, Billings Library, Third Level
48 University Place, Burlington
RSVP recommended: lvivanco@uvm.edu

Join us for a hands-on workshop with award-winning graphic novelist and educator Marek Bennett.  Marek will demonstrate basic approaches to creating comics based on primary source texts, research, oral histories, scientific principles, & other non-fiction materials.  Using a basic mini-comics template, participants will start their own non-fiction projects and gather feedback from test-readers!  We will provide materials, source texts and topic ideas (or feel free to bring your own).

NH-based cartoonist, musician, and educator Marek Bennett leads discovery-based comics workshops for all ages throughout New England and the world beyond!  His comics work includes the graphic novel series, The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby, as well as drawing, translating, & editing for The Most Costly Journey (2021) with the bilingual El Viaje Project. In 2022, both books were featured at the National Book Festival in Washington DC. Marek is the recipient of the New Hampshire Governor’s Arts Award for Art Education. His website is www.MarekBennett.com.

Free and open to the public. For more information, contact Special Collections at uvmsc@uvm.edu or 802-656-2138.
